Granada, Part 2...the Palace of Charles V

On the way to the Nasrid Palace one passes a very formal and elegant Italianate palace built in 1527 by Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. Built within the Nasrid Palace fortifications, it is a wild juxtaposition architecturally. The central court follows the overall notion of structures surrounding courts found throughout the Alhambra complex. In this instance the round central space, classical detailing, stone materials, and perfect scale and proportions are beautiful to behold. The exterior elevations and detailing are also quite a thing of beauty. The base of the elevations is in and of itself worth the price of admission!
