The Cathedral of Palma De Mallorca

After our angsty day in Sòller, we decided to head a different direction from the winding roads of the Northwest coast of Mallorca and spend our day in the Big City of Palma. The drive in was simple and we parked directly adjacent to the Cathedral in an underground car park.

Fronted by an architectural lake that is clearly modern, the cathedral structure is commanding from the water and vast in scale. A fortress stands guard to the west fronted by gardens with overt references to the Moorish gardens we've experienced along the way of this trip. A phenomenal staircase flanked by small lion faced fountains ascends and at the top appears an impressive display of carved sandstone...the main entrance to the cathedral.

The tour brings us into a side entrance and through a series of smaller spaces that are immediately peaceful. There is a beauty and grace to all of the spaces of this cathedral. Gorgeous stained glass, an alter by Antoni Gaudí, and a thoroughly modern chapel by a contemporary Mallorcan artist all combine beautifully. Though ornate at times, we notice an abundance of light and a sense of calm reverence..something Cynthia and I needed.
